Why I am endorsing Hannah Spencer to be the Green Party candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election!

For those of you who don't know me and my political background, let me first tell you a few things about myself. My name is Jake Welsh, and I have been an active member of the Green Party of England and Wales, mostly as a member of Manchester Green Party. From 2018-2025 I was Manchester Green Party's elections officer, running candidate selections for general election and target council candidates, as well as selecting all the non-target council candidates and always ensuring the Green Party ran a full slate of candidates across Manchester. I was an agent for General Election candidates in Manchester in 2019 and 2024.

Green Party members in Manchester and Tameside are this week selecting their candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election. I am endorsing Hannah Spencer and in this post I will explain the reasons why.

I first met Hannah after her fellow ward councillor Owain Sutton introduced her to me as we both had a mutual interest in animal rights and she wanted to work with me on a motion to Green Party conference on banning greyhound racing. Both myself and Hannah have campaigns to close down the Belle Vue Greyhound Racing Stadium which was in the Belle Vue area of Gorton (although at different times so we didn't meet there). I met her lovely greyhounds at a picnic Manchester Green Party held to celebrate the local council elections in 2024.

Later that year she proposed her motion on banning greyhound racing to the Green Party conference in Brighton. I gave a passionate speech supporting the motion, but it was narrowly defeated and referred back. We consolidated the defeat and the motion was brought back to the following conference with changes and it was passed. The dedication and passion for the issue of greyhound racing was very apparent with Hannah. She really cares about the issues she campaigns on.

As former secretary for the Greater Manchester Federation of Green Parties, I worked with Hannah on her campaign for Greater Manchester mayor. She was selected quite late in the day for that position but she did us very proud. She attended many hustings and got us our best ever mayoral result, getting our best ever result. Ever since then I've only gotten more and more impressed with Hannah. Not only has she become leader of the Green Group on Trafford Green Party, but she spends so much of her spare time supporting other campaigns to get Greens elected up and down the country. She also speaks at events wherever she can including supporting campaigns across the city region and beyond. Alongside her councillor work, case work, day job, looking after rescue greyhounds.

Since being appointed as the party's spokesperson on immigration and refugee support, Hannah has really upped her social media game, posting regular videos on her social media profiles. She's also very experienced with traditional media having been interviewed on TV and radio several times. Hannah is the right choice for Gorton and Denton for many reasons. She's previously lived in and been campaigned politically in the constituency.

She's done more of the leg work as a politician and has the highest profile of any Green Party politician in Greater Manchester. She's on the left of the party, caring about issues from fighting the far right, to supporting trans rights, to campaigning to end animal cruelty. Hannah is a genuine team player more than willing to put in the work to support getting more Greens elected.

Vote for Hannah Spencer for a local, experienced, hard working, genuine, left wing, talented candidate who I believe is our best chance to defeat the threat of Reform UK and assign Labour to the dustbins of history.
